Internships & Co-ops

University Career Services coordinates two experiential learning options between students and employers:

Internships

Internships are work experiences that provide students with practical knowledge in a particular field or area of study. Internships may be paid or unpaid and may or may not be credit bearing. Credit for internships is arranged through the student's academic department.

If you are posting an internship position that requires a student to obtain academic credit, George Mason University requires you to complete the Experiential Learning Agreementexternal site image. For more information about this document, contact University Legal Counselexternal site image.

Cooperative Education (Co-op)

Co-op is a structured program which enables students who meet specific eligibility requirements to gain paid, professional-level work experience related to their major and career plans. Co-op positions provided by employers must relate to the student's academic major, and at least 80% of the time on the job must be spent on tasks related to the student's field of study. A minimum of 12 consecutive weeks of work with the same organization is required.

Career Services also monitors students' progress throughout their time in the program. Upon completion, they receive a special notation on their official academic transcript for every semester they participated in the program.
