Top Ways to Make a Job Fair Work for You:

    1. Attend a workshop to Prepare for the Job Fair
    2. Watch the"Job Fair 411" DVD and listen to two podcasts during which Mason students and employers share what to expect at the Fair:
    3. Clarify your goals and what you want to get out of the Fair.
    4. Research the employers, narrow down the list to the most suitable for your interests and needs, and find out which day of the Fair the employers will attend.
    5. Prepare a resume that presents your background and interests clearly and concisely. Check you own resume, have your resume reviewed by your career counselor or at the Resume Clinic.
    6. Learn networking tips and how to develop your personal pitch through the Networking Tutorial.
    7. Dress and act professionally with confidence and enthusiasm.
    8. Use a firm handshake and maintain direct eye contact.
    9. Prepare questions you want to ask employers. It is best to avoid questions about salary and benefits in your initial contact.
    10. Try to anticipate the kinds of questions employers might ask and prepare sample answers. Examples:
      • Why are you interested in our organization?
      • What kinds of positions interest you?
      • What academic background and experience do you have to offer?
      • How would this position help you meet your career goals?

"" After the Fair... Tips

  1. Send a "Thank You" follow up letter to recruiters you spoke with. Remind them of your interest in their organization. Ask any follow up questions you forgot to ask at the fair.

  2. Write up notes on information you learned about each organization you spoke with, including "next steps" recommended by the recruiter.
  3. Ask yourself, "What did I learn about interviewing/networking?" from this experience.
  4. Note things you would do differently when approaching a recruiter and discussing your interests, skills and career goals. Practice how you would present yourself next time.
  5. If in doubt about how you prepared for the fair or how you presented yourself, meet with your Career Counselor to discuss strategies for next time.
