Evaluate Offers and Negotiate Salary
- When evaluating the offered salary, consider all factors.
- What are the benefits (e.g., flexible work hours, in-house training opportunities, education benefits, parking, company car, health and dental plans, vacation and sick leave)?
- Once all the factors have been considered, if the salary offered is too low, ask the employer for a higher salary. The salary you request should be based on research related to the occupation and your qualifications. The employer will either agree to your request or make a counteroffer. There is, of course, the possibility the employer will not be able to meet your salary expectations. If this is the case, you may still choose to accept the position. Negotiation is an accepted part of the job?hunting process.
- If you are asked about current or previous salary, which is lower than what you are seeking now, explain the difference in circumstances and why you are worth more in this position (e.g., earned degree, amount of experience). Always express your enthusiasm and gratitude.
