Career Related Jobs Can Give You an Advantage . . .

     Part-time or summer jobs that relate to your field of study and/or career interests can help you be more competitive in today's job market when you graduate. These positions are paid; involve work responsibilities that enable you to develop career-related, transferable skills; and give you valuable exposure to a particular organization and occupation. Be sure to follow these steps to find a position that works for you:

  1. Use PatriotJobWeb to review listings of part-time or summer career-related jobs currently available in fields that interest you. Be sure to act quickly since these openings are immediate and are purged from the PatriotJobWeb system every 30 days. Attend the annual Mason Job and Internship Fairs to learn about career-related summer positions.
  2. Look for positions that offer you opportunities to develop skills that you like to use as well as those you want to develop. Keep an open mind about positions that may be available; part-time, career related jobs enable you to explore occupations that may be of interest to you. Discuss part-time and/or summer job options with the career counselor who works with your major and develop a set of learning objectives to help you determine how to make the most of this career-related experience.
  3. Applying for part-time or summer career related positions is a competitive process. Before you begin your search, be sure you have developed solid job hunting strategies that include resume writing, developing interviewing skills, researching employers, etc.
  4. When you contact an organization, ask for a complete position description, get the name and title of your phone contact for future reference, and verify any other significant information.
  5. Be persistent! Finding the kind of part-time or summer career related job you really want requires research, preparation and repeated follow-up.
