With over 2.5 million civilian employees, the federal government remains a major employer in the Washington, D.C. area. Federal student job programs or internships offer an advantage to those who have identified the government as a target employer.

Manage the Federal Job Search

To effectively manage a federal job search, treat the over 200 federal departments, agencies, and bureaus as if they are separate organizations. Instead of waiting for a job listing to appear, make it your quest to:

  1. Learn which agencies have positions matching your qualifications and interests.
  2. Learn about special federal hiring programs, e.g., Student Career Experience Program/Co-op (SCEP), student temp educational program (STEP), summer employment, outstanding scholar (>3.5 GPA), Presidential Management Interns (PMI) for grad students.
  3. Expect a variety of hiring procedures, sources of job listings, and job requirements for each agency.
  4. Learn effective application techniques.
  5. Practice patience, persistence and networking!
