Plan a Strategy for Landing a Job

Once you have researched the job market for your field in your new geographic area, you need to plan a strategy for landing a job there. If positions in your career field are plentiful such as computer science, you may line up a job before moving by planning a visit to the area and scheduling several job interviews to coincide with your visit.

If positions in your career field are less numerous you may need to move to the new location before finding a job. Consider visiting your new location before moving, having set up in advance information interviews at several organizations to meet persons in your field and learn about the job market and trends.

Once you have moved to your new location:

  • Seek job information at local college and university career centers.
  • Work through the local state employment service to learn more about employers, trends, and outlook. These services are usually free and sometimes offer access to word processors and other resources.
  • Consult the reference librarian at a regional library for directories of local employers and other job hunting resources.
  • Consider working for a temporary agency to bring in some money and give you time to get to know the area better.

Using the process and strategies outlined here can change a long distance job search from an overwhelming task into a manageable plan.
