Sources for Locating Job Openings

     There are essentially three sources for locating job openings: printed media, electronic media, and personal contacts or networking. Use all three but put most effort into networking since over 63% of people find their jobs through networking with friends.
Traditional approaches include:

  • Responding to ads in newspapers, trade journals, and other published or online employment bulletins;
  • Participating in on-campus interviews through University Career Services;
  • Attending job fairs;
  • Mailing or electronically sending resumes to organizations that may be hiring; and
  • Using employment agencies.

    Each approach requires not only an initial contact, but a follow-up contact as well. Most job hunters use a combination of written, telephone, and in-person communication. If the initial contact is by telephone, follow up immediately by sending a cover letter and resume. When applying by cover letter and resume, follow up by telephone. An in-person contact or interview should be followed up immediately with a thank-you letter.
