SAMPLE COVER LETTER FOR AN INTERNSHIP

August 1, 2001

Ms. Carolyn James
Technical Manager
XYZ Technical Solutions
5555 Lee Highway, Suite 50
Fairfax, VA 22032

Dear Ms. James:

I am writing to apply for the Help Desk internship XYZ Technical Solutions recently advertised at George Mason University. The opportunity to explore working for such a dynamic and innovative provider of systems solutions is particularly intriguing to me as a Computer Science major who is seeking hands-on experience in information technology.

In addition to the knowledge I have gained through numerous computer science courses, I have also increased my skills through projects involving object oriented programming. In one particular software engineering project, I worked with two other students to design an advising system, using C++ and UML, which allows students and faculty to view and make changes to class schedules and rosters online. We presented this project to our class and discussed the step-by-step procedures we used to design, evaluate, and troubleshoot the system.

I would like to expand my experience and knowledge in information technology. Your internship offers a unique opportunity to acquire more technical skills, connect with clients, and work independently and as a team player. I believe that I could contribute significantly to XYZ as your company continues to expand in this region.

I am eager to meet with you to discuss my qualifications as outlined in my enclosed resume. I will contact you next week to see if my qualifications meet your needs, or you can reach me by e-mail, pbartle@gmu.edu, or voice mail, 703-652-8703. Thank you for your consideration.

Enclosure

Sincerely,

Paul Bartlett

Mr. Michael Genera
The Genera Group

Fairfax, VA 22030

Dear Mr. Genera:

As you may recall, I interviewed you last August to learn about working in Public Relations. The information you provided helped in my decision to pursue a career in this field. Enclosed is a copy of my resume for the position of Public Relations Associate listed in the George Mason University PatriotJobWeb database. I believe that my experience and skills meet the qualifications you seek, and I would be most interested in discussing them with you in more detail.

My internship as Media Assistant at Global Networks, Inc., and position as Events Coordinator at George Mason University's Office of Events Management have allowed me to successfully advertise and promote over 20 major events attended by more than 22,000 participants. I have experience writing news releases and promotional materials and have assisted in the design and development of public relations campaigns. I consider myself to be creative and enthusiastic, with excellent communication skills. In addition, I enjoy interacting with diverse groups of people and collaborating on projects.

As an English major, I have developed clear, concise writing skills along with the ability to conduct research and to design and deliver engaging presentations using a variety of technology and media.

I would enjoy meeting with you again should you select me as an interview candidate. I can be reached by phone at (703) 385-1234 or e-mail at pcollins@net.com to provide you with more information or to schedule an interview. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
