Spend one day with a professional or company
Take a Patriot to Work is a program that allows you to spend one day
with a professional in a job or company that you are interested in. You
will "shadow" them as they go through their work day. Some companies
will have special presentations or projects for you to experience or
You will get an employee-only look at what they do and where they work. You will gain a realistic perspective on what it really means to work in an industry you like and what skills you need to get there.
Not sure where to intern? Or even what you want to do? This is a great way to explore your options. You can apply for up to three shadowing opportunities each day. You will learn more from a job shadow than you can from just a conversation with a recruiter without the long-term commitment of an internship or job.
Take a Patriot to Work is a great way to meet people in the career field you like and to learn about potential internship and job opportunities.
The job shadowing experience varies depending on the organization you are visiting but here are some examples:
- Conduct informational interviews with employees
- Tour the organization's facility
- Attend meetings and other company events
- Observe and ask questions
- Assist with a research project
- Prepare reports or spreadsheets
- Work directly with or observe interactions with clients
All degree-seeking Mason students can participate! First, complete the mandatory orientation then apply for the shadowing experiences you are interested in. Be sure to let your professors know you will be participating if you have a class that conflicts with your shadowing experience. If you are currently working, be sure to ask for the day off with your scheduling supervisor.
Please note: Some employers may have specific restrictions such as major or year in school.
There is no cost to participate, however students are responsible for their own transportation to the location, parking, and lunch.
You are responsible for your own transportation.
- Research the organization and the person you are shadowing.
- Come up with informational interview questions. You can find examples in the Career Readiness Guide.
- Get a suit or business professional outfit ready.
